Izamal retains its colonial charm with cobblestone streets, brightly colored houses, and beautiful courtyards. The historic center of the city has been declared a “Magical Town” for its architectural beauty and cultural significance.

Historia
What is the history of Izamal?
The history of Izamal dates back to the pre-Hispanic era when it was an important ceremonial and religious center for the Maya civilization. It is believed that the city was founded around 300 BC and reached its peak between 600 and 900 AD.
With the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century, Izamal came under colonial rule. The Franciscans were the first to establish themselves in the city and built an important convent, known as the Convent of San Antonio de Padua, which became an iconic symbol of Izamal.
