History

In the 15th century, the Spanish arrived in the region and began establishing colonies. In 1528, the Spanish conquistador Diego de Mazariegos founded the town of “Villa Real de Chiapa” in the location that now occupies San Cristóbal de las Casas. The original name referred to the province of Chiapa, which encompassed a large part of the current territory of Chiapas.
