What is the history of Bacalar?
Bacalar is estimated to have been founded around 415 AD and was part of an important Mayan lordship known as Sian Ka’an Bakhalal, which encompassed a vast area in the Yucatan Peninsula.
With the arrival of the Spanish to the region in the 16th century, the history of Bacalar took a turn. The Spanish conquistadors recognized the strategic value of Bacalar due to its defensive position and its proximity to the lagoon, which provided them access to maritime routes.
