Comitán de Domínguez is the third-largest city in Chiapas, after Tuxtla Gutiérrez and Tapachula. Comitán is a Magical Town (Pueblo Mágico) located in the region known as “Los Altos de Chiapas,” in the mountainous area of the state.
The surroundings of Comitán are home to various natural sites of great beauty, such as the El Chiflón waterfalls and the Montebello Lakes (Lagunas de Montebello).
Chiapa de Corzo has been considered one of the Magical Towns of Mexico since October 9, 2012. 🎂
History
What is the history of Comitán de Domínguez?
The ancient settlement was founded in a swamp by a group of Tzeltal indigenous people, in 1486 it was conquered by the Aztecs, who named it Comitán, derived from the Nahuatl words “komitl-tlán,” which means “Place of fevers.”
In 1556, the missionary Diego Tinoco relocated the population of Comitán along with a large group of Tojolabal indigenous people to the current location. In 1625, it was renamed “Santo Domingo de Comitán.” On September 3, 1915, the name was further modified to include the surname Domínguez in memory of the Mexican physician and politician Belisario Domínguez Palencia.

It is approximately 38.525 miles southeast of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, another important city in Chiapas, and about 90.0988 miles east of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the capital of the state.
